The Role Of Government In Irrigation Support

By Roger Russell

Food security is an issue that is faced by many countries that do not receive a lot of rainfall. The best way through which this issue can be addressed is by reclaiming lands and encouraging farmers to water their crops. Irrigation support from the government will be required. The following are some of the roles played by the state in such projects.

When farmers are enlightened about the right procedures to follow and decisions to make in certain situations, they tend to have more yields. If this project is initiated in an area where farming has not been practiced before, a lot of training has to take place for interested people to know how irrigation will be done. The government sends extension officers that host educative seminars and meetings. They are also available for individual consultations.

Quality seeds and supplies must be used, and farmers may not access them without the help of a government. The supplies can be too expensive, forcing some people to avoid them completely. This results to low-quality yields that will not be marketable. However, with subsidies, the supplies become more affordable. The government may even give out supplies free of charge to encourage more people to be part of such a project.

The yields ought to have a ready market for people to agree to be part of the project. Some of the produce are perishable, and if no market is sought, the farmers will count a lot of losses. The state should find a way to do away with selfish middlemen. Good roads have to be constructed too to enable the farmers to get their produce to the market in time.

Water is the main resource that will be needed in this kind of a project. It is up to the government to determine a good source and plan on how this resource will be channeled to the farms. For the sake of the sustainability of a scheme, the team should monitor how the water is distributed and used. This way, the resource is not wasted.

Technical stuffs are also needed for these projects to succeed. This includes engineers that ensure the layouts are done in an efficient manner and that the water is effectively channeled to the users. If the farmers will be using sprinklers and other machines, they will need professionals to help in the installation and repairs. This helps in ensuring that productive time is not wasted looking for help when there is a system failure.

Introducing a method to people and leaving them to execute it on their own is not right as they will still need guidance on several areas. You also need to be sure that they are doing everything the right way. The agricultural officers will hence conduct a follow-up so as to know how farmers are progressing. Mistakes can be detected and corrected early enough.

It is the role of the government to offer research facilities for agriculture, especially in areas that have to be reclaimed through irrigation. For all the crop to do well, the right varieties have to be planted and to know these varieties, a professional team has to conduct tests. The state hires and pays these professionals and provides all the resources they need for their work.
